Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan equalled the record for the highest number of one-day international wickets in the third ODI with India in Colombo.
The 36-year-old, in his 327th match, dismissed centurion Yuvraj Singh to join Pakistan all-rounder Wasim Akram, who took 502 wickets in 356 matches.
Muralitharan is already way ahead as the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket, with 769 from 125 matches.
India could secure an unassailable lead in the series after posting 363-5.
Sachin Tendulkar made a spectacular start after India chose to bat, stepping down the pitch to slam a free hit off the bowling of Dilhara Fernando over long-on for six in the second over, but was was given out lbw five balls later.
Gautam Gambhir was dropped nought by Thilina Kandamby at point in the next over, but his luck did not last long as a straight drive from Virender Sehwag was deflected on to the stumps by bowler Fernando and saw the left-hander well out of his ground.
Sehwag hit three successive fours off Nuwan Kulasekara, while Yuvraj smashed four fours in an over from Farveez Maharoof as the partnership intensified.
Murali was hit for two fours in his second over as Sehwag recorded his half century in the 20th over of the innings.
In his first over, veteran all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya, in his 430th one-day international, spilled a routine return catch when Sehwag had made 80.
Yuvraj launched Jayasuriya over long-on for a mammoth six, but after a woeful mis-field from Ajantha Mendis allowed him a boundary the ball before, Murali got his record-equalling wicket when a cut shot went straight to cover.
Sehwag's majestic innings was ended by a superb direct hit from Jayasuriya at mid-off then left him well short as he pushed for a quick single, and he did not need to wait for the third umpire's decision.
