Anurag Kashyap's forthcoming venture, Dev D, is a remake of the saga of the popular lover Devdas, but with a difference. Though the basics of the tale, lost love and self-destruction,remain intact, the difference lies in the fact that Dev D has been directed keeping the present scenario, of the 21st century, in mind. Dev D has all the elements of the modern world - mobile phones, plastic money in the form of debit/credit card and even internet. While Abhay Doel plays the role of the protagonist (Devdas), Mahi Gill, Dibyendu Bhattacharya and Kalki Koechlin will be seen playing other important roles.
The story of the modern version of Devdas, Dev D, revolves around the ultimate lover, Dev, the son of a zamindar (tax collector), who is deeply in love with his childhood friend and sweetheart, Paro (Mahi Gill). Unlike other remakes of the saga, Dev D proclaims Dev to be a hypocrite, who does not have the courage to stand up for his own rights, forget about declaring his love in front of his family. The status difference between the two lovers only adds to the problem. As a result, this pathetic lover loses his love to a wealthy and aged widower (Dibyendu Bhattacharya).
Dev goes off to Calcutta, where he ends up meeting a prostitute, Chandramukhi (Kalki). It is, thence, that the sense of guilt takes over his mind completely, and he sets off on the road of self destruction. The people he meets, on the way, are those of whom we can relate in our present world. Set amidst the backdrop of the winters of Punjab and Delhi, Dev D is a contemporary account of the classic and conventional Devdas. Watch out for the existence of a lover like Devdas, in the present times!
