Thane: Dahi handi celebrations moved into the top gear in the lake city as netas, karyakarta and govinda troupes sweated it out all through Wednesday giving final touches to the mega event, which is expected to draw more than 50,000 people on Thursday.
Dahi handi seems to be the pinnacle of all festivals in Thane, going by the unrealistic and lavish spendings by leaders of political parties to attract maximum attention. From Bollywood hotties, DJs and experts in laser shows to Hollywood filmmakers, Thane seems to be new capital for govinda celebrations.
The guests include a group of around 20 parliamentarians from UP, Bihar, Orissa and a neighbouring MP who are here to watch the human pyramids.
"Their presence shows that the dahi handi celebrations in Thane have won admiration across the nation. It reflects that this festival has broken all barriers of caste and community," said NCP leader Jitendra Awhad who host the city's popular dahi handi here. Awhad has announced a collective prize money of Rs 65 lakh. Former minister and BJP leader Sahahnawaz Hussain is likely to make a guest appearance at dahi handi.
Filmstars too have stepped in to endorse the celebration hosted by Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik. "Aftab Shivdasani will be our brand ambassador while the female troupes will be cheered by Prachi Desai," said Purvesh, Sarnaik's younger son. For top Sena leader and local MLA Eknath Shinde, the dahi handi will be cultural event and different from "hi-fi celebrations".
Meanwhile, prize money of Rs 2,51,111 has made a dahi handi the biggest in Vasai region.
