Firaaq MovieOne look at 'Firaaq' and you feel that it is similar to 'Mumbai Meri Jaan', but only as far as the social subject and screenplay structure are concerned. Everything other than that, right from the basic setting to the character sketches, is totally different. 'Firaaq' delves on the after-effects of the Godhra carnage, and not the incidence in itself. It comes across as a human drama, which explores the condition of the common man, after he has been through hell and back. The characterization of the movie is good, but we do wish Nandita Das had been able to resolve the conflicts of the characters as effectually.

Some of the plots seemed to be quite hurried and unconvincing, such as Naseeruddin Shah’s sudden despair and Sanjay Suri’s abrupt acceptance of his true identity. Even the Deepti Naval track wasn't exploited fully. Another aspect that could have made the movie outstanding, not simply good, was the orphan child. Rather than two sub-plots, making him a part of each and every track might have made 'Firaaq' more effective. One thing is for sure, the movie makes you think and form your opinion at the end. As for the performances, none of them were below excellent, with each of the actors delivering their very best.

Firaaq Pre-release Review

Seven years have passed since the Godhara tragic riots shook the Indian state of Gujarat. However, the wounds are yet to heal fully. Trying to present the effect of the carnage on the people of Gujarat is Nandita Das' directorial debut - 'Firaaq'. Already having won award at various film festivals, namely Asian Festival of First Films 2008 in Singapore, International Thessaloniki Film Festival in Greece, International Film Festival of Kerala and Dubai International Film Festival, the film is all set for a release on 20th March 2009.

Produced by Percept Picture Company, 'Firaaq' has Rajat Dholakia and Piyush Kanojia as its music directors. Its impressive star cast includes Paresh Rawal, Deepti Naval, Nowaz, Mohd. Samad, Naseeruddin Shah, Sanjay Suri, Tisca Chopra, Shahana Goswami, Raghubir Yadav, Dilip Joshi, Sumeet Raghavan, Vicky Ahuja, Amruta Subhash and Arun Kumar. A fiction flick, falling in the drama genre, the movie covers a 24-hour period, one month after the Gujarat riots. It tries to present the emotional journey of the victims, the perpetrators as well as the silent observers, all connected somehow.

'Firaaz' gives us a peek into the life of different people, all of them affected by the riots in one way or the other. There is a middle class housewife, who refuses to help a woman who has come to her doorstep, desperately seeking refuge. Even one month after the riots, the housewife is suffering from the guilt of not helping a victim. Two friends find their loyalty challenged in an atmosphere that is ripe with fear and distrust. A few wronged young men of Gujarat come together to form a group, and decide to take revenge, as a means to take out their vulnerability and resentment.

Living in the riot-hit Gujarat is a modern-day Hindu-Muslim couple. In the aftermath of the riot, they are trying to decide whether they should hide their identity, so as to survive, or assert themselves. Having lost most of his family members in the Gujarat carnage, a boy is seen moving through the streets, trying to find his missing father. Then, there is a saintly musician, who tries to stick to his idealistic view towards life. However, as he witnesses a proof of the civil discord, his faith loses its meaning. 'Firaaq' seeks to explore the impact of Gujarat riots, on the survivors.
