Post the 26/11 attacks, the Mumbai marathon is the first big event that will see the city unite for a cause. The theme of the marathon is peace and security and the response overwhelming.
This year, over 35,000 people will run the marathon with the theme of a secure Mumbai.
"You saw how people marched to the gateway. This will be as big," said Sunil Shetty, Bollywood actor.
Even more fitting then that the marathon begins at the CST, one of the 11 places where terror struck.
Even though the registration for the Mumbai marathon closed well before the terror attacks, post 26/11 the city seems united in its reason to run and thousands more are expected to turn out in a show of strength. Mumbaikars are practising for the 21-km run.
"The message we must give out is that we are not afraid. We are united against terror," said a Mumbaikar.
"Earlier it was just about running for a cause but now the cause is running for Mumbai and terrorism," said another Mumbaikar.
And who better to give inspiration to Mumbai than an athlete who overcame a life-threatening illness to become a champion and the marathon's ambassador.
"I am running with the city," said Gail Devers, former 100 m Olympic and World Champion.
