NCERT textbooks on Gender-sensitivity



NCERT has given its nod to the introduction of a textbook at the plus-two level that deals with issues such as gender sensitivity and physical, emotional and psychological changes in boys and girls.

The national monitoring committee of the council has approved the textbook titled 'Human Ecology and Family Sciences' and it will be introduced as an elective subject from the ensuing academic session in class XI, NCERT spokesperson B C Patro told PTI.

The two-year syllabus has been developed by the council's Department of Women Studies.

"The book also introduces the adolescents to diversity and plurality in urban and rural settings and concerns of homeless and low resources," said the textbook coordinator Sushma Jaireth.

The content of the book has been drawn from areas such as food and nutrition, human development and family studies, fabric and apparel, resource management and communication and extension, she said.

Shagufa Kapadia of University of Baroda, one of the book's chief advisers, said it basically replaced the areas taught as Home Science and modernised the content, including going beyond the wo, Mar 30 (PTI) NCERT has given its nod to the introduction of a textbook at the plus-two level that deals with issues such as gender sensitivity and physical, emotional and psychological changes in boys and girls.

The content of book provides ample scope for professional avenues of higher education and career opportunities in fields that include food processing and technology, guidance and counselling, design for fabric and apparel and media design and production, Jaireth said.

Students will find chapter like "what makes me I, "effective communication skills," nutrition, health and well being, "fabrics around us" and "work, worker and workplace" both interesting and useful, she said.
