Over ten thousand people, including youth, women and children, on Friday paid homage to Muthukumar, the 26-year-old man who set himself on fire on Thursday demanding a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.
His body was kept for public viewing at Kolathur.Amid the emotionally charged atmosphere, Muthukumar’s family turned down Rs 2 lakh solatium offer of Local Administration Minister M K Stalin.A big pandal was erected on a road near the office of the local Vannigar Sangam.
Till late afternoon, the mood was not to have the funeral till the war in Sri Lanka was called off.However, the uncertainty ended after leaders of the Sri Lankan Tamils Protection Organisation, an umbrella organisation of political parties and non-political pressure groups, decided that the funeral would take place on Saturday afternoon.Mourners would gather at 12 noon to begin a nearly 7.5 km silent march at 3 pm towards Moolakotthalai near Basin Bridge.
This extension is to enable sympathisers from all over the state pay their respects to Muthukumar and participate in the funeral.
