In a major blow to the National Democratic Alliance, the Biju Janata Dal announced on Saturday that it had split from the Bharatiya Janata Dal, over failure to reach a seat sharing deal for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
"The BJP-BJD will contest separately," Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters, adding that 'winnability' was the reason behind the break up in the decade-old alliance.
BJD leaders believe that the party and the chief minister's popularity is at an all-time high and it doesn't need the BJP to win the election.
The BJD has 61 seats in the state assembly and the BJP has 32 seats. The BJD has 12 seats in the Parliament.
Further details are awaited.
