Facebook: Mumbai Traffic Police Official Page

Jolted by Facebook photographs of cops violating traffic rules, Mumbai
traffic police has finally launched its official page on Facebook and
Twitter. The pages will have senior cops answering queries from
people. The most attractive feature, however, will continue to be the
section where live photographs of offenders can be uploaded.
Till Tuesday night, the Facebook page had 125 members and four
photos had been uploaded. The Twitter page had only five followers.
One of the pictures posted on Facebook was of the chaotic
situation at Babulnath Cross Lane I, where there is double parking.
The traffic department immediately responded that the complaint had
been forwarded to their Tardeo division.
"If the cops actually take action on the basis of photos posted,
then hosting a page on the net is definitely a great idea,'' motorist
Amit Kapoor said.
Regular updates about action taken by the cops is also uploaded
online. This includes prosecution of speedsters (27 bikers booked on
Sunday night) and cabbies for refusing to ply (210 drivers charged
till Tuesday).
Motorists have also been
asked to use standard numberplates and get rid of fancy numberplates
within five days flat.
"Our mission is to effectively enforce traffic regulations,
inculcate a sense of discipline among road users through traffic
education and vigorous enforcement, reduce accidents and ensure
smoothflowing traffic. We expect people to give suggestions on
improving traffic conditions in the city,'' a top official said.
