Balasaheb Thackeray refused to meet Advani

In a significant development ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray refused to meet BJP's prime ministerial
candidate L K Advani here on Tuesday.

Sources said that Advani, who is in Mumbai for a party function, wanted to meet the Sena head.

Sources also said that Advani wanted to meet Thackeray, but was refused a meeting.

On his way to the airport after the BJP function, Advani reportedly wanted to meet the Sena chief. BJP leaders then conveyed his wishes to Matoshri, the residence of the Thackerays in Bandra, but got a reply in negative.

The Sena spokesperson Dr. Neelam Gorhe has confirmed these developments.

"In fact, Advani should have fixed this meeting earlier," she said. The BJP leader Vinod Tawde, however, denied it.

"Advani has not asked for any meeting today," he said.

Not very long ago, in December 2008, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray had equated relations between saffron alliance partners Shiv Sena and BJP with a quarreling husband-wife.

"It is like this couple we once had as neighbours. The husband used to beat the wife each morning and in the evening, take her out to Chowpatty and treat her to 'bhel' and coconut water. Our relationship may be like this," the 82-year old Thackeray had said.

Sena mouthpiece 'Saamna' had also carried an interview with the party chief who had expressed his views on topics like Hindutva, current national politics and son Uddhav's ability to lead the party ahead of state Assembly elections.

Thackeray, who is known to enjoy cordial relations with NCP chief Sharad Pawar, had then evaded a query on chances of the Maratha leader to become prime minister, saying he did not want to comment on the issue as of now.
