After the success of Slumdog Millionaire, the original slum film Salaam Bombay!, which released 21 years ago, is all set to release again soon. Last week, New York-based filmmaker Mira Nair was in Mumbai for a day to plan the release details with a distribution company.
Mira Nair says, “Salaam Bombay! will release all across the country tentatively in May. For the film’s release, we will be bringing together everybody who was part of the film all those years ago, including the kids. We want Salaam Bombay! to be seen by today’s youngsters who might have never seen the film.”
Talking about the film, Mira says, “I was inspired to make Salaam Bombay! by a short film titled Pishot. On the first day of the shoot, I got news that the actor who played the title role in Pishot was killed in a shoot out on the streets. After the incident, not only was I more determined to make Salaam Bombay! but also to share the profits of the film, if we had any, with the street kids. For the 24 shortlisted kids, we designed a workshop which took care of their medical expenses, trained them to dance and act, and even reunited them with their families.
After Salaam Bombay! released, we formed the Salaam Bala trust which has been active for the last 20 years and we have about 17 outlets between Mumbai and Delhi. I even spoke to Lovleen and Danny (Boyle) that if they are looking to do anything through our trust, they are most welcome to do so.”
