At least five people were killed and 10 injured today when a bomb explosion ripped through a polling station during by-election for a
parliamentary seat in Pakistan's restive northwest region.
The blast occurred at a polling station in a government-run school in Buner district in North West Frontier Province, TV channels reported. There were also reports that some armed men hiding in hills around the polling station had opened fire on voters who had gathered there.
Polling for a seat in the National Assembly or lower house of Parliament was going on when the bomb exploded. Five people were killed and 10 injured in the blast, the channels said. The by-election is being held as the seat fell vacant due to the death of parliamentarian Abdul Mateen Khan. The blast took place about 90 minutes after the polling started.
Earlier, the area had witnessed clashes between supporters of two rival political parties. The suspects travelled to Syria as tourists in July and August and then met one of the two "masterminds", Shaikh said.
The masterminds planned to smuggle a large quantity of weapons into Bahrain to be used for acts of violence and sabotage. Police stormed houses of the 14 suspects, confiscated explosives, according to the minister who also said that all of them confessed and gave detailed account of their plans. Two of the 14 were arrested early on December 18
