Nimesh Mehta has come a long way since his humble beginnings. Mehta, who is in his early 30s, started off as a vada pav-seller outside Panchratna building, the headquarters of diamond trade. Today, he owns a multi-crore dyes and chemical business and two buildings in south Mumbai. On Wednesday, the Hughes Road resident will add one more feather to his already illustrious cap—that of a debutant singer.
    Nimesh, who is a die-hard fan of vivacious and versatile singer Asha Bhosale, has specifically chosen to release his album on September 8—Bhosale's birthday. "I have sung a duet—Hua Hai Mujhe Yaar—with Ashaji,'' he gushes. "I still cannot believe that I got a chance to sing with her. She is legendary. Her presence is enlightening and encouraging,'' he says, adding, "She is unbeatable and unstoppable when it comes to music.''
    Incidentally, Nimesh's family was reduced to penury when they lost all their money in the share market around 15 years ago. "My mother then started providing tiffins to office-goers. As she was doing well, we decided to put up a stall outside Panchratna building,'' he recalls.
    The plot was considered unlucky by all. "But it clicked for us. Our samosas and vada pavs were a big hit with all the diamond traders,'' he says. Diamond merchants who frequented Nimesh's stall were quick to realize his potential and advised him to enter the export business. "I took out a Rs 2-lakh loan and started exporting dyes and chemicals to various South Asian countries,'' he says. The rest, as they say, is history. Nimesh credits his success to his wife Mona. "She is my lucky charm. After I started a company in her name, my business flourished.''
Nimesh still visits the stall outside Panchratna with his mother. "My mother is very attached to the place so she makes it a point to visit it every day. In fact, I wanted to release my album in the stall,'' he adds.
But considering that a celebrity would be releasing his album, Nimesh changed his mind.
